Burning Question

How can a pattern call for size 30 thread and a size 10 hook and say the finished size will be 38 1/2" diameter and I use size 10 thread and a size 6 hook and the table topper turns out to be around 20" diameter? I find this happens with a lot of patterns.

I find that happens a lot. It's not gauge, and I can't say it's really a lazy designer. I think it's more of an overlooked by mistake thing, or a math error.

I agree with Cher; I think the editor just made a mistake. But I know it is frustrating!
Was it an old book or a newer one?

The book is from 1980 It is the Premiere issue of Crochet Fantasy and every pattern in there either has the wrong size or doesn't state the size. I can usually tell about how big something will turn out by the number of rows. I will now be on the lookout for it when I make some of the other things from the magazine.

Thanks for joining my blog. Glad to see you enjoy crocheting with thread. I don't know the answer to your question because I always use size 10 thread and a 7 hook. The smaller stuff kills my hands.
